5 July - Copenhagen Day 2, Part C

Our lunch plan was to hit the café in the "Black Diamond", the new national library.

Thing about this building is, it is an extension of a much older building, the previous National Library, which continues in use. The piece of the new building on the north side of the street is attached to the old building.

Here's how the joint looks inside.

So after a quite nice lunch (we split a tuna salad sandwich on deliciously chewy Danish break and a greek salad) we found our way back via a bus. How to get around Copenhagen by bus if you are a tourist: (1) Bring up Google Maps on the iPhone. Tap the pulsing blue dot that shows where you are. Tap "Get Directions," tap on where you want to go, tap on the little "transit" icon. Maps shows a bus route from about-here to nearly-there, including the stopping points.

We've used this method a couple of times now and can give two thumbs-up to the Copenhagen transit system. The buses go everywhere and often. We've never waited more than 10 minutes for the next bus, usually less—on Sunday afternoon, mind you.

In this case, it showed us route 9A, which took us to the Central Station. From there it was a short but hectic walk along streets very crowded with tourists and locals swarming around the station and the Tivoli to the hotel, where we collapsed for naps before...

...heading out again for an early evening at the Tivoli Gardens. We should note that all the museums, and the public transit, and the Tivoli are included in the "Copenhagen Cards" we purchased beforehand. Anyway, the world-famous Tivoli is a cross between a lovely park, an upscale food court and Great America — all extraordinarily tidy and clean.

Well-groomed lush plantings and fountains everywhere.

Lots of kitchsy shops and fast-food places.

Lots of people queuing for rides.

People riding rides.

Lots of parents and adorable kids.

We had supper at an Italian restaurant, not bad, and walked around watching people scaring themselves on rides. Finally headed off to bed after a loooong day.
